In the luxury mattress category, claims of craftsmanship, natural materials, and artisanal quality are common - but independent verification is rare. Some brands build plush mattresses with thick layers of polyurethane or memory foam, add a cashmere cover, and call it luxury. Others require zippers and self-assembly, leaving alignment and longevity to chance. And many reserve the word "organic" for a single component in an otherwise conventional build. Avocado is different. | GOLS-CERTIFIED ORGANIC LATEX |
Where most mattresses use polyurethane foam, we use GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex - made with 95% certified organic latex, the highest standard. Our Dunlop latex is sourced from co-owned farmer societies and processing facilities in India and Guatemala, plus sources in Asia, and is processed in GOLS-certified organic facilities, operating under the USDA's National Organic Program. It is also FSC® certified, verifying responsible forestry practices at the source.
Latex configurations vary by model. The Extra Firm (Tight-Top) shares the same 2-inch Dunlop latex comfort layer and dual-coil system as the Firm, with a different coconut fiber configuration that delivers an even firmer feel (available on a separate page). The Firm (Tight-Top) uses 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft) in the comfort layer. The Medium (Standard) features two layers of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex - 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft) and 1 inch (D65) in the base, totaling 3 inches. The Plush (Pillow-Top) uses 5 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex: 2 inches in the pillow-top layer (D65), 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65), and 1 inch (D65) in the base. The Ultra-Plush Box-Top combines 3 inches of FSC®-certified Pure Talalay® latex (not GOLS-certified) with 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, for a total of 6 inches (available on a separate page). No chemical adhesives are used to bind the layers - every mattress is needle-tufted by hand, in up to 24 locations.
Our Dunlop and Talalay latex is independently certified to eco-INSTITUT® standards at the material level. Pure Talalay latex is a premium upgrade in our Ultra-Plush Mattress, offering a distinctly soft and buoyant feel. Its unique production process creates a lighter, more breathable, and exceptionally resilient latex - contouring more gently to the body than Dunlop while maintaining excellent support and pressure relief.
The open-cell structure of Pure Talalay promotes superior airflow, helping regulate temperature throughout the night. Its natural resilience enhances spinal alignment and reduces pressure points, making it ideal for side sleepers and those who prioritize plush comfort without sacrificing support. Pure Talalay latex may include a seam, which is virtually undetectable and designed to reduce material waste.

Every Avocado mattress includes a layer of pure, naturally crimped organic wool (1 ounce per square foot) beneath the organic cotton cover. Sourced from free-grazing sheep and independently certified to the Responsible Wool Standard by Textile Exchange, our wool contains no additives, synthetics, or blended materials - no rayon, no polyester, no chemical flame retardants.
Wool's complex natural structure does remarkable work: it wicks moisture, regulates temperature in both warm and cool conditions, resists odor, and acts as an all-natural fire barrier that meets federal flammability standards without chemical treatments. Its natural crimp provides bounce, body, and soft support. In the Ultra-Plush, wool works in concert with silk and mohair to create a multi-fiber luxury comfort system - each fiber contributing a distinct performance characteristic that synthetic materials cannot replicate.

Our mattress cover is made from organic cotton in a soft, natural color, blended with 3% elastane for functional stretch required for tufting and enhanced durability, and is fully compliant with GOTS standards. Responsibly and ethically sourced from India, this fabric is quilted over generous layers of organic wool, silk, and mohair - creating the visibly plush, inviting surface that distinguishes the Ultra-Plush from every other mattress in our line. A thin, non-woven backing layer prevents natural fibers from shifting or working through the outer cotton over time. This backing meets GOTS accessory requirements. Reinforced edge seams are double-stitched for added durability, and four heavy-duty upholstered handles make the mattress easy to rotate or move. (GOTS License: CU863637).

| INNERSPRING SUPPORT SYSTEMS |
Our patent-pending innerspring system features between 833 (Twin) and 1,379 (King) individually wrapped steel coils arranged across seven strategic zones to support hips, back, and shoulders - with a reinforced steel perimeter for consistent edge-to-edge support throughout the life of the mattress.
For our Ultra Plush mattress, three wire gauges are placed with purpose: 16-gauge (narrow diameter) perimeter coils reinforce the sides and header/footer zones; 15-gauge coils run through the center third; and 14-gauge (larger diameter) coils flank both sides of the center section, supporting the shoulder and hip areas equally, because our mattress is designed to be rotated regularly.
Each coil floats independently within food-grade, non-woven polypropylene fabric to improve airflow, support, and spinal alignment. Coils are heat-treated and stress-relieved, manufactured by Avocado from recycled steel wire, and assembled using an environmentally conscious adhesive composed of tested components (Waxes: CAS 8002-74-2, Resin: CAS 8050-26-8, Antioxidant: CAS 6683-19-8, EVA Polymer: CAS 24937-78-8).

PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of man-made chemicals used in various industries worldwide. Known for their persistence in the environment and in the human body, they are often referred to as "forever chemicals." At Avocado, we're committed to ensuring our products are free from harmful levels of PFAS. Our mattresses have been rigorously tested using advanced techniques such as Liquid Chromatographic/Tandem Mass Spectrometer (LC/MS/MS) analysis and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis for 320 PFAS substances. This testing method is superior to generic organic fluorine screening tests, which can often be inaccurate and fail to detect specific PFAS compounds. A law label is a legally required tag describing interior filling materials. Few companies share this before purchase. We believe differently. The Avocado Ultra-Plush Mattress is assembled in Fullerton, California, with domestic and imported materials consisting of natural latex foam rubber pad (Dunlop and Talalay), natural wool fiber, silk, mohair, and a coil spring unit, plus a fabric cover of organic cotton (97%) and elastane (3%), which provides stretch and recovery in the knit cover. However, up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils in seven ergonomic zones provide meaningful spinal support beneath the plush surface. Back sleepers who prefer a softer feel may find it comfortable, though our Medium or Plush models are generally better suited for back sleeping.

What sheets do I need for the Ultra-Plush?
At 15.5 inches high, the Ultra-Plush Box-Top requires deep-pocket sheets (typically 17 inches or deeper). Standard-depth sheets will not fit properly. We recommend organic cotton deep-pocket sheets for the best experience.
Why do organic luxury mattresses cost more?
Certified organic materials cost more to grow, source, and verify than conventional alternatives. Is the Ultra-Plush comfortable for all body types?
The Ultra-Plush is built for side sleepers, combination sleepers, and anyone who prioritizes deep pressure relief and luxury.
